The bipartisan spirit espoused by President-elect George W. Bush is motivating some of New York's Democratic lawmakers to brush up their credentials as political moderates. Historically, centrist Democrats are few and far between in New York, especially in the city. No wonder ``New York liberal'' has become a common epithet in Washington.
Bipartisan spirit Even so, a few prominent New York Democrats-including Sen. Charles Schumer and Westchester Rep. Nita Lowey-are suddenly spotlighting their ability to reach across party lines on important issues and claim a role in the bipartisan mood sweeping Congress. Mr. Schumer, for example, sent a letter to Mr. Bush last month offering ``my best wishes and cooperation'' and applauding the president-elect's pledge...
