The defection of vermont Sen. James Jeffords from the Republican Party-which will give Democrats control of the U.S. Senate-could give added clout to New York's two Democratic senators. Charles Schumer, now in his third year in the Senate, would be in line to chair two subcommittees: the economic subcommittee of the Banking Committee, and the administration and courts subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee.
Hillary Rodham Clinton, as a freshman, has little seniority. But she has an outside shot at heading the subcommittee on clean air, wetlands, private property and nuclear safety, where she is the third-ranking Democrat.
