City eyeing swap: airports for WTC site; Exchange with Port Authority would give mayor bigger role in rebuilding.(Brief Article)

The Bloomberg administration is floating the idea of giving the two city airports to the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey in return for city control of the World Trade Center site. Daniel Doctoroff, deputy mayor for economic development, has broached the idea with members of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., but sources say he has not yet approached the Port Authority.

A land swap, which could be structured as a sale, could give Mayor Michael Bloomberg much greater authority in rebuilding the trade center site and speed development of lower Manhattan.
