More foreign runners skip NY marathon in a sign of continuing weakness in the tourist industry, the number of international runners expected for the New York City Marathon on Sunday is falling. Marathon planners say they are now expecting between 8,000 and 9,000, down from 12,000. That would be the same as the number of participants in last year's event, which took place shortly after Sept.

11. Headquarters hotels, the Hilton New York and Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers, have rooms available, and many hotels are cutting rates. Some 30,000 runners are expected in all, according to the New York Road Runners Club, which opened the race to more local runners in September.
