Then, in 1993, when he was running his own money management firm and brokering biotech deals, he met a scientist from The Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The scientist had come up with a way to manipulate the human immune system to fight off cancer.

Mr. Armen found its potential so compelling that he agreed to co-found a company to develop the technology. ``Starting a (biotech) company was the last thing in my mind,'' says Mr. Armen, now chairman and chief executive of Manhattan-based Antigenics Inc. ``The company is in existence because of our conviction that the technology has the capacity to cure cancer and other diseases.''...
