Byline: James Brady There's more heated editorial comment and ferocious debate these days about Roger Ailes than about Michael Jackson, the football Giants or Zsa Zsa Gabor's hairdresser. Al Gore thinks Roger's a menace. The Times can't seem to make up its mind. Others think the guy's a genius.

Still others say he's a fascist. And Rupert Murdoch, who employs Mr. Ailes, is enjoying the whole business immensely. Although I am a liberal Democrat (what Roger would call a ``pinko''), I learned long ago while covering the Senate (1956-58) that often my left wing heroes, like Paul Douglas, were arrogant and distant, while political dinosaurs like Barry Goldwater were warm and approachable to a kid reporter.
