Byline: mary sisson As one might expect of a woman who has climbed the corporate ladder almost to the top, Gloria McCarthy had a specific career goal firmly in mind when she joined Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield fresh out of college. She wanted to make enough money to pay for her wedding.

"I came for what I thought would be a summer job,'' says Ms. McCarthy. "I'd like to make it sound more glamorous, but (choosing Empire) was pretty random.''
