Byline: James Brady By the time you read this, the trials of Martha Stewart ought to be over, one way or the other, unless there's a hung jury. And then what do we gossip about? On the Friday that Judge Cedarbaum threw out the most serious of the charges against her, I took myself off to Nick & Toni's in East Hampton for dinner.

Not to celebrate-journalists aren't supposed to have a rooting interest-but to contemplate the meaning of life over a meal with Kelly Smith, the one-time New York Times stringer for the Hamptons who now runs a gift shop out there on Newtown Lane, called A Little of What You Fancy. Which may tell you something about East Hampton, that people give up careers at the greatest newspaper in the country to sell stuff to the summer...
