Byline: anita jain These days, when kids want to download Usher's latest hit, they may consider Kazaa, where they can get "Yeah!'' without putting down a penny. Moments later, after pondering those nasty lawsuits the music business has been filing against teens and grannies alike, some might decide instead to visit the new hot site for downloading, iTunes, where they can buy the single for just under a buck.

The advent of iTunes proves that consumers will pay for music online, when the system is accessible and easy to use. Now, three New York companies are hoping that they, too, can get in on the ground floor of the nascent business of legal downloading. Digital toehold America Online, MusicNet, and eMusic are hoping to become even more successful...
