Clay Felker was open about service being a secret weapon.(Viewpoint)

Byline: James Brady Every so often, in the salad days of the early 1980s, Clay Felker would remind all of us then laboring at New York magazine, "Service is our secret weapon.'' I had created for him and was writing an upmarket gossip page called The Intelligencer, and the magazine was still housed in a ramshackle old townhouse in the East 30s, with a roof so leaky that rainwater literally cascaded down the stairs.

Mike Kramer, for one, stacked up old copies of The Times under his desk to sop up the flood so he could type with his shoes dry. I was thinking of those days last week when I read in this newspaper Matthew Flamm's front-page piece about the changes that new editor Adam Moss is making at Felker's old magazine ("Working from the Clay model'')....
