Company Spotlight: #37 Hudson News Co.(The Private 200)(sales and revenues)(Brief Article)

Crain's New York Business, November, 2004 by Fredrickson, Tom

Byline: TOM FREDRICKSON A familiar name to travelers who like to grab a magazine, a paperback or a pack of gum before boarding an airplane or a train, Hudson News has managed to grow through rough times. Most of the North Bergen, N.J.-based company's estimated $200 million in revenue growth this year is coming courtesy of its December 2003 acquisition of W.H.

Smith North American Airports, which added about $160 million in sales and 15 airports. The other $40 million comes from same-store growth and from expansion into airports in Jackson, Miss.; Memphis; Seattle; and Vancouver. It's a good thing for Chief Executive James Cohen that retail is up. About 40% of Hudson's revenues are in the long-stagnant wholesale magazine business.
