Last week, two students at the City University of New York were named Rhodes Scholars, a singular honor for the two young men, their university and New York City as a whole. That the two men are both immigrants from the former Soviet Union is an important sign that a revitalized CUNY is once again a pathway to take new Americans to the nation's highest scientific and professional ranks.
But the symbolic importance of what Eugene Shenderov and Lev Sviridov have accomplished goes far beyond their university. It is a reminder that so much of New York's success these days is due to immigrants.
