Last month, the drugstore chain finished installing contactless credit card terminals in its 400-plus locations in New York. The technology lets customers tap a contactless card on top of the terminal rather than having to sign a receipt or punch in a personal identification number.

(The stores will still accept conventional cards.) Few contactless cards are circulating in New York, but they are coming. Chase Card Services, the most aggressive issuer, plans to make all 94 million of its credit cards contactless-capable by the end of 2006.
