Yet in a remarkable turnabout, the company today shines like a polished Granny Smith. New York's largest supermarket chain, owner of such familiar names as Food Emporium and Waldbaum's, has righted itself after what appeared to be a death spiral.

The company, formally known as the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., has returned to profitability for the first time since 2000. Its stock price has tripled this year, to more than $30 a share.
