A Martha Graham Dance Company principal dancer, Tadej Brdnik, has issued an urgent plea for donations to keep the famous troupe from shutting down. Sources say the company has run up a $1 million deficit in recent years following a legal battle with an heir of the late Ms. Graham who claimed ownership of her dance choreography.

The company is celebrating its 80th anniversary next month. Executive Director LaRue Allen didn't respond to requests for comment. The share price of Scholastic Corp., U.S. publisher of the Harry Potter books, plunged more than 10% last week on news of a higher-than-expected loss for the quarter that ended Feb. 28.
