E-firms alive, kicking; Reports of demise prove premature for 15 Silicon Alley veterans; many thrive.(electronic firms)

Byline: Amanda Fung Last week, NBC Universal paid a princely $600 million for iVillage Inc. Not bad for a dot-com that many people considered near extinction as recently as a year ago. What is even more surprising is that iVillage has plenty of company. Of the 15 companies--including iVillage--that made up the city comptroller's original Silicon Alley index of the largest local Internet companies in 2000, all are still around in one form or another.
Five have been bought out at rich prices (see box, Page 30). Three have turned into consistent moneymakers in recent years. Five have recently reached profitability. Two laggards have yet to earn a dime some five years after the great tech crash, but they are still hanging on. Best and biggest the bottom...
