Hybrid car sales not up to speed; Demand tops supply in NY; more models, lower costs sought.(News)

Byline: Tommy Fernandez Meredith williams loves her hybrid car and is happy to talk up its energy-saving virtues. Two years ago, the Wall Street executive bought a Toyota Highlander with an engine fueled by gas and electricity, plunking down $12,000 more than she would have paid for a regular model.
Although she has shown off the vehicle throughout her hometown of Port Washington, L.I., she is still the only hybrid owner on her block. "It's not that people don't care,'' says Ms. Williams. "I bet if manufacturers made many more of these cars, there would be a huge jump in consumption.'' Such is the paradox of New York's hybrid auto market, the fourth-largest in the country and one that clearly could sustain a greater supply of state-of-the-art autos. Car...
