The authors of a book claiming that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene have sued the publisher of The Da Vinci Code, arguing that its author, Dan Brown, stole their concept--as if thousands of works of fiction were not based on nonfiction books.
Washingtonpost.com jettisoned conservative columnist Ben Domenech after charges of plagiarism were leveled--though his real crime was supporting President Bush in a city where he is anathema. Copying someone's work is objectionable. Sloppy journalism is bad. But there is an implied assumption that all work, even in newspapers, should be original. It just isn't.
