Wall Street firms have shelled out about $15 billion over the past four years to settle litigation stemming from the failures of Enron and WorldCom, the scandal over research-analyst conflicts, and other matters, according to a report from Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Most firms have resolved their worst legal problems, but Morgan Stanley will have to fork over an estimated $550 million to settle Ron Perelman's suit concerning its advisory role in a merger with Sunbeam Corp.
