Byline: Elisabeth Butler Fashion industry insiders raised their eyebrows last week when Liz Claiborne Inc. selected William McComb, a bigwig at Johnson & Johnson, to be the new chief executive of the $5 billion apparel company. But Mr. McComb expects to make a smooth transition into the fashion world.
After all, he says with a laugh, his high school class in Fort Wayne, Ind., named him "most stylish'' during his senior year. Mr. McComb, a bit of a clotheshorse who sported a Hickey Freeman suit, Ike Behar tie and Liz Claiborne shirt to the office last Tuesday, will rely on his abundant people skills and knack for marketing to women to succeed in his new job.
