Byline: Samantha Marshall I can relate to the experiences of the people I write about this week, because I'm an expatriate. I arrived from Canada in May 2001, sponsored for an H1B visa by Crain's. I wasn't thinking about a green card back then, but was just happy to have a job when almost everyone else in my industry was losing theirs.

The fact that the job was in New York was a bonus. I soon started putting down roots. I didn't buy an apartment or get married, though finding an American husband would have been one way to secure my residency. Instead, after a lifetime of living abroad--in Canada, England, Cambodia, Hong Kong and Vietnam--I finally found myself in a place I couldn't imagine leaving.
