Byline: Erik Engquist and Anne Michaud Spitzer gains most from L.I. Senate Gov. eliot spitzer is the big winner after last week's state Senate race on Long Island in which Democrat Craig Johnson (below) defeated Republican Maureen O'Connell, narrowing the GOP hold on the Senate to 33-29.
The governor was so involved in the campaign that he proofread Mr. Johnson's campaign literature. Mr. Spitzer gains strength to take on big budget battles in Albany, such as the fight over health care spending cuts. The Working Families Party, which broke with Senate Republicans to endorse Mr. Johnson along with private-sector unions 32BJ, RWDSU, CWA and UFCW, also comes out on the right side.
