Byline: Hilary Potkewitz As of last month, Stewart International Airport has been officially touted as a sort of Newark Airport North--a fourth site to alleviate pressure on New York's other, badly overcrowded facilities. The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey plans to purchase the Stewart lease for $78 million in a deal that could close by the spring.

The agency has reportedly already set aside $150 million for a 10-year expansion of the airport, located 60 miles north of midtown. Renovations could begin as early as the fall. Much needs doing. With just eight departure gates, two baggage carousels, one fast-food shop--a Quizno's--and an ocean of nearly empty linoleum, Stewart International Airport has the look and feel of a relic of a simpler age...
