Money alone won't fix New York City's public schools, but it's a start. Apart from a dip in 2002, per-pupil spending has continued to go up year to year over the past decade. The Department of Education's forecasted budget for 2007 was a formidable $17.1 billion. Despite classroom reforms, the city continues to lag suburban public school districts in one important measure: teacher pay.
Median salaries in Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties are far ahead of those for city teachers.
