Vioxx saga

Chemistry and Industry,  Sept 24, 2007

Pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co was able to celebrate a legal victory in the US after New Jersey's Supreme Court made a ruling that could save it from class-action lawsuits related to its troubled painkiller Vioxx. Vioxx was withdrawn from the market due to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke (C&I 2006,17, 6).

The Supreme Court reversed the decision of two lower courts deciding that lawsuits against Merck have to be brought by individuals or companies. Merck had estimated that a class-action lawsuit could have cost it up to $18bn (13bn [euro]).
