Machine maker Nokia becomes Nextrom

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND -- Swiss cable machine maker Nokia-Maillefer, after buying four equipment companies in the past two years, now has a new name: Nextrom Technologies. Nokia-Maillefer, based in Lausanne, had 1997 sales of $322 million and profit of $7 million. It changed its name in April. Nextrom is organized into three global business groups -- telecom, energy and plastics -- that reflect its machinery business.

That business comprises extrusion systems for making wire and cable, including fiber optics; blown film; and pipe, conduit and tubing. Nokia-Maillefer has been on a buying spree in recent years.
