GM SPINOFF HAS UAW WARY OF VISTEON EFFORT.

Second suddenly may be a bad position for Ford Motor Co. The Dearborn, Mich., automaker long has been second to General Motors Corp. in automotive sales. Nonetheless, Ford profited handsomely -- in fact, it topped GM's profit the last two years, including by a 10-to-1 margin in 1998. But it's apparently not as fruitful to be the second automaker to spin off a parts operation within a year.
Officials at Visteon-United Auto Workers locals in metro Detroit said GM's spinoff of Delphi was ``a wake-up call'' to the 23,500 UAW workers at Visteon plants who frequently talk with Delphi colleagues at union gatherings.
