New masterbatches improve laser marking Clariant Masterbatches Division has developed products it claims optimize color laser marking of plastics, especially polyolefins. The Easton, Md., company said polyethylene and polypropylene usually are difficult to mark, because they have nonporous, low-energy surfaces.

Clariant's new masterbatches produce high color contrast between the image and base resin, even for translucent and transparent polymers, the company said. Clariant said it can make the masterbatches in a range of colors, including white, blue, pink, violet and gold for dark backgrounds and contrasting shades for lightly colored polymers.
