Dow's '99 volume growth defies forecast.

NEW YORK -- Almost every prediction Dow Chemical Co.'s Anthony Carbone made for 1999 was wrong. And he couldn't be happier about it. "By any basis of comparison, we had an incredible year on volume growth," said Carbone, Dow's executive vice president of plastics, hydrocarbons and energy. "We exceeded our expectations in spite of monomer outages and disruptions in other feedstocks." Last December, Carbone had predicted 1999 would be a trough year for the industry, with sales and profits hitting the bottom of the industry's business cycle.

Thankfully for Dow, a robust U.S. economy, fueled by a strong rebound in oil prices, wrecked his forecast. Midland, Mich.-based Dow expects to close 1999 with volume growth of 11 percent in its overall plastics unit, which...
