Polymer composites stuck in holding pattern.

RENTON, WASH. -- Boeing Co. wants to incorporate more polymer matrix composites into future commercial aircraft, but the additions won't occur soon. The company has made a minimal effort to develop graphite composites in the past five or six years but now is experiencing "an optimistic phase" in considering the materials, said Jack McGuire, director of engineering research and development for commercial airplanes.
Boeing engineers are exploring weight-saving applications, but long lead times mean designs will not reach production for several years. Lower weight can improve an aircraft's speed, cut fuel consumption and reduce noise. Boeing needs those selling points in its tense competition with Europe's Airbus Industrie.
