Bayer unveils PC for extreme temperatures.(Special Report)(Brief Article)

Bayer Corp. has commercialized a new extreme-temperature grade of polycarbonate in North America. The Pittsburgh-based firm also recently had two of its materials selected for new medical applications. The new grade of Bayer's Makrolon-brand PC is aimed at temperature extremes. Extreme cold applications for the material include storage containers, ski-boot buckles and snowmobile visors; while extreme heat uses include lamp and lighting components.

The new grade has been commercial in Europe since 2001 but just became available in North America this year. The grade is produced at a Bayer plant in Antwerp, Belgium.
