These are some of the photomicrographs submitted for the 1994 ASM/International Metallographic Society competition. They are reproduced here for your enjoyment. "Copper-cerium-aluminum," by R. H. Lee, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Ill. This eutectic alloy for simulated nuclear waste management was photographed using scanning backscatter electron imaging.
Color is computer enhanced. "Aladdin's Magic Lamp," by S. Gokhale, G. Nadkarni, Dept of Mechanical Engineering, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, New Brunswick. An unusual cluster of graphite nodules is encompassed by equiaxed ferrite in ductile iron. Interference contrast produces the colors.
