This is the 74th consecutive Howe Memorial Lecture, a tradition which in itself testifies to the status of the man we honor today. The list of former Howe lecturers adds further evidence and makes one realize both the distinction and responsibility of following in their footsteps. As an attendee at these lectures for the last 30 or so years, I confess that, occasionally, my gaze and thoughts have switched from the lecturer to this patrician portrait [ILLUSTRATION FOR FIGURE 1 OMITTED].
