Coating alumina fibers with sputtered metal has been proposed as a means to enable the fibers to retain more strength when they are incorporated into metal-matrix composites, reports NASA Glenn Research Center (formerly NASA Lewis Research Center), Cleveland, Ohio. Strength of uncoated alumina fibers in iron and iron-nickel alloy matrices is typically reduced from a strength of about 2.9 GPa (425 ksi) to 1 GPa (150 ksi).
