Flutes originally were made of natural materials like reed and bone. In the 17th and 18th centuries, wood dominated. Although the modern metal flute was developed by Theobald Boehm (1794-1881) in the mid-19th century, it was not until the early 20th century that metal became a widely used material of construction.
