Silicon nanocrystals emit light in blue, green, and red.

Light-emitting spherical crystals that emit blue, green, and red light have been reported by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin. The spherical silicon crystals are called nanocrystals or quantum dots. According to Prof. Brian Korgel, "Bulk silicon does not emit visible light, but our structures do.
