Mark Smith, FASM, researcher at Sandia National Laboratories, and his fellow researchers are striving to improve fundamental scientific understanding of the cold spray technique. They are working with a consortium of eight U.S. companies, including automakers and aircraft engine manufacturers.

Consortium members plan to use the processes refined at Sandia, for instance, to create tough new coatings on engine components made from lighter-weight composites, or to deposit layers of conductive metals onto substrates for use as heat-tolerant under-hood automobile electronics. ...
