A technique called angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been developed to study the behavior of complex materials such as superconductors at the Stanford Linear Accelerator, Stanford University, California. In this method, a high-resolution spectrometer detects electrons emitted from the material surface after it is struck by intense X-ray beams.
