A hybrid plastic-over-metal material that offers high load-bearing strength along with savings in cost and weight compared with metallic materials has been reported by Rhodia Plastics, Farmington Hills, Mich. Plastic/metal technology may be divided into open or closed rib structures. In open rib designs, thin metallic sections are molded over with thermoplastic ribs.

While these provide a good strength-to-cost ratio, their mechanical strength and stiffness are usually isotropic and they often require complicated molds with hot runners.
