Novel ZnMgO alloys with a cubic sodium chloride structure, which may provide a better alternative to III-nitrides of Wurtzite hexagonal structure, are under development by Professor Jay Narayan and his associates at North Carolina State University, Raleigh. These materials have applications ranging from light-emitting diodes and lasers, to biosensors and optical communications.
