Engineers at the Edison Welding Institute, Columbus, Ohio, have developed a computational model that is said to simulate steady-state friction stir welding processes, with model predictions consistently producing results within five percent of experimental data. The model will help researchers, manufacturers, and designers optimize FSW weld parameters and develop tool designs and materials without the large number of expensive and time-consuming weld trials that are traditionally required.
