The U.S. Dept. of Energy's Environmental Management Science Program has reportedly awarded more than $1.5 million to engineers at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, Idaho Falls, to develop a model for predicting how fractures grow. Their model will apply to many materials, but is primarily focused on steel casks holding radioactive and other high-level hazardous waste.
