Clean diesel technology can help the United States meet its goals of increasing national security by reducing energy consumption in the transportation sector, says Allen Schaffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum. Testifying before the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, Schaffer said, "Diesel engines are a proven, efficient and readily available technology that can reduce fuel consumption by 30 to 60% over comparable gasoline engines, especially in popular sport-utility vehicles and light-trucks, which now make up more than half of all new sales."
