A technology to manufacture steel-surfaced aluminum components has been developed at Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Mich. Called CastClad, the process is said to result in parts that have low density, high strength, ductility, wear resistance, and heat resistance. During the process, a thin steel sheet is treated and inserted into a sand/metal mold, then molten aluminum is poured into the mold.

The steel bonds strongly with the aluminum as it solidifies, producing a lightweight part with excellent surface properties. The technology is also being explored to manufacture steel-capped aluminum pistons with grooves very close to the top surface.
