Defect-free welds have reportedly been produced by friction stir welding of AISI 1010 steel plates by researchers at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, S.C. Peak surface temperatures close to 1000[degrees]C (1830[degrees]F) were measured on the tool above the shoulder by thermocouples and an infrared camera.
