'Explosive structuring' textures mold surfaces. (Advanced in Automotive Materials).

The conventional method of making a plastic part with a natural surface texture, such as a leather grain or leaf pattern, is to engrave or etch the pattern into the mold. "Explosive structuring" is a potential alternative to these time-consuming and expensive methods, says Gunter Helferich, a scientist in the Polymer Engineering Dept., Fraunhofer Institut Chemische Technologie (ICT), Pfinztal, Germany.
