A relatively inexpensive and lightweight strain sensor wire that produces a measurable change in electrical output has been developed by Sensortex Inc., Kennett Square, Pa., with the help of SBIR funding from the Missile Defense Agency, Alexandria, Va. Called Magstrain, the sensor is made by coating a small diameter (75 to 125 microns) copper wire with a ten-micron thick nickel-iron film.
