Aluminum casting eliminates 50 hours of part assembly. (Metals).

Advanced Materials & Processes, November, 2002

A rudder assembly for an aerospace application has been investment cast of aluminum by Alcoa Howmet Castings, Darien, Conn., at its facility in Bethlehem, Pa. The assembly had previously been composed of three aluminum castings, sheet metal constructions, aluminum hog-outs, and associated aircraft fastening hardware.

It had also required 50 man-hours to assemble. The one-piece investment casting has provided a consistent, dimensionally accurate component that requires minimal inspection and greatly reduced rejection rates compared to the previous production method. Measuring 36 x 24 x 14 in. (91 x 61 x 36 cm), the component is cast in A 357 aluminum, with 41 ksi (283 MPa) tensile strength, 31 ksi (214 MPa) yield strength, and 2.5% elongation. The part won...
