A three-dimensional aluminum foam casting designed to enhance the energy absorption of an automotive structural component is under development in a collaboration between Cymat Corp., Toronto, Ontario, and PSA Peugeot Citroen, France. Cymat produces SmartMetal, a stabilized aluminum foam product in which an aluminum alloy is combined with a metal matrix composite to build strong lightweight panels and shapes, or to fill cavities.
