A transportable scanning thermographic system for nondestructive evaluation or testing of materials for cracks, flaws, disbonds, corrosion, and wear is available for licensing from NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, Va. In operation, a carnage conveys a heat source and a thermal imager at a constant speed over the surface of the structure.

The imager follows the heat source and produces a video image of the thermal characteristics of the surface as the heat is diffused through it. Temperature differences indicate regions of differing heat diffusivity. Because damaged, corroded, or disbonded areas are thinner, they dissipate heat differently from sound sections, and they show a corresponding difference in temperature.
